Why the Philippines Should Be On Your Bucket List

If you’re looking for your next tropical island destination, the Philippines should be on the top of your list. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I think it’s one of the most underrated countries out there. It shocks me that so many people on their Southeast Asia trails, overlook this spectacular spot. After all, this country ticks all the boxes, from rich history and culture, amazing sceneries to hospitable and friendly locals.  

And for those foreigners who do venture to the Philippines, it’s no surprise that many have now visited several times or have even decided to stay for long periods of time. It’s an amazing place.

But what really makes the Philippines special and irresistible? Here are five reasons that will have you booking a ticket to the Philippines as soon as possible!

All the Good Food

Filipino food is one of the most underrated and overlooked Asian cuisines. Heavily influenced by Spanish and Chinese cooking, local dishes in the Philippines are diverse and never lacking in flavor and aromatics. 

The most popular dish is called adobo, a stew with chicken or pork (or both) with soy sauce, vinegar and enough garlic to keep the vampires away. Another big hit and usually eaten for breakfast is a savory local sausage called longganisa. Quite similar to the Spanish chorizo, this is best paired with the oh-so-yummy garlic rice and fried egg. Depending on the region or the province where it came from, the longganisa can be a bit sweet, garlicky or even spicy. 

Like any other Asian countries, the Philippines also has its fair share of street food. It’s common to see street food vendors outside bars and pubs waiting for the drunk munchies to hit. Deep fried fish balls, squid balls, hotdogs and sausages are usually available and is perfect with the sweet and spicy dipping sauces. For the brave ones, there’s always the ever-famous balut, or the fertilized duck egg with a semi-developed duck embryo.  I couldn’t stomach this, but I’m told for first timers - it’s best eaten with salt, vinegar, and your eyes closed (lol).

Breathtaking Beaches

The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands so it’s not surprising that it has some of the world’s most stunning beaches. Yes, even CNN Travel and Forbes agree. 

One of the most popular beach destinations is Boracay in Aklan province which is less than an hour away from Manila by plane. It has pristine white sand that stretches for almost four kilometers and lined with resorts, restaurants, and bars on the side.  In 2018, the government closed the island for six months for rehabilitation. Now, tourists flying in need to show reservations from accredited resorts and accommodations and are required to follow strict guidelines in keeping the island clean.

Another province you can’t miss is Palawan. Tourists with limited time normally have to choose between visiting El Nido or Coron, both reachable by planes from Manila. Once there, people normally get around via habal-habal or motorcycle. These could easily be rented for a few hours, days or months.  

El Nido is what you have most likely read or heard about and is obviously more popular with tourists. It actually inspired the book and the movie The Beach. El Nido is a dream tropical paradise with clear blue waters that stretch as far as the eyes can see. You can choose to join a tour group or plan for a private tour to go island hopping. The fee usually includes an awesome lunch with a selection of grilled dishes and drinks. You can also add if you need some snorkeling gear. The usual highlights of the tour that never fail to make jaws drop are Small Lagoon, Big Lagoon, and Secret Beach. 

The smaller yet equally beautiful island of Coron is more popular with the divers with its impressive Japanese wrecks from WWII and rich marine life. There are less resorts and accommodations so prices are a bit higher. For non-divers, there are also group or private tours you can join where you get the chance to snorkel and see the unique coral gardens plus, the amazing underwater scenery. 

Adventures Galore

If you’re someone who is constantly seeking out adventures and new activities to try, you are going to LOVE the Philippines. It’s not just pretty beaches, there is so much more to enjoy.

In the North, you can go caving in the Sumaguing Cave. This 3-4 hour tour is not for the faint at heart! And will involve crawling, climbing, descending, squeezing through narrow openings, getting wet, and much more. That said, this seplunking challenge is sure to be something you remember forever. Make sure to make a stop at the hanging coffins en route to this tour as well!

If the thought of hours in a cave makes you squeamish, there’s another popular cave option in Palawan - the Underground River. Where you can take a 45 minute boat ride through a cave and witness stunning limestone cliffs, exciting cave formations, and even wild creatures like bats, lizards, and more!

One of the best days of my entire life was going canyoneering at Kawasan Falls. In case you aren't familiar with the term canyoneering - it’s basically an all-encompassing term for a river adventure that involves swimming, climbing, hiking, and cliff diving. And this particular spot offers a lot of cliff diving. I ended the day exhausted, scraped up and bruised. But with the biggest smile on my face.

A great experience to pair with Kawasan Falls is swimming with whale sharks in Oslob! These beautiful, friendly creatures are enormous and reminded me of dogs of the sea. I was totally awe-struck in their presence and our 20 minute swim passed in what felt like five minutes.

The Philippines has it’s fair share of volcanoes as well. If you are up for a trek, make sure to check out Mt Mayon in Legazpi, Albay in Bicol or Taal Lake in Tagaytay City (great option if you are coming through Manila).

And if sickeningly gorgeous rice terraces are your thing, make sure to take a trip up north to Banaue Rice Terraces in the Ifugao Province. These spectacular fields are considered an Eighth Wonder of the World by UNESCO and have been around for more than 2000 years - cultivated and cared for by the indigenous people.

Hospitable Locals (Who Speak English)

Filipinos make you want to visit their country - with their friendly and welcoming tendencies. They will continually go out of their way to help, make you feel at home, and befriend you.

Tagalong and English are both official languages in the country - so pretty much everyone speaks English. And it always makes the journey a little easier when you can communicate easily!

Fun Nightlife & Parties

The Philippines also has some amazing spots for nightlife and parties. If you want to party it up on the beach, Boracay should be on your list - with it’s white sand beaches and crystal blue waters, you have the perfect backdrop to laze around during the day nursing a hangover….and bar & club hop by night. You’ll find a lot of fire dancers and outdoor entertainment on the main beach as well. There’s always something going on and fun to be found.

Another great spot for some entertainment is Alona Beach - it’s smaller than Boracay no doubt, but has a lively energy as well. Being located in Cebu, on Bohol Island, you also have a lot of day time activities to explore here as well.

If you prefer more of a big city vibe, Manila is the place to go (and you’ll likely be flying through here on your way elsewhere….so may as well make a night of it!). There are 3 main nightlife areas: Makati, Ermita, and Malate - each of them with a different vibe, but equally fun. Keep in mind that bars and clubs in Manila are top-notch, but may be more expensive than what you find in other places in the Philippines. For amazing rooftop views with a cocktail, make sure to visit Sky Deck View Bar and Skye Lounge (located in Makati).
