Perfect Weekend Itinerary Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a lovely city. It’s modern, clean, has great restaurants and food. It’s easy to get around, and quite walkable. There aren’t a ton of sites, per se, but it’s incredibly liveable and there’s plenty to keep a visitor occupied with on a weekend excursion.
I have pulled together my favorite bits of my trip to Copenhagen - as an easy-to-follow sample itinerary. Hopefully this helps make your visit to Copenhagen, fun and incredibly simple! Let me know if you have any questions :)
Friday - Day 1
Arrive in Copenhagen and get settled into your hotel
Take an afternoon Free Walking Tour of Copenhagen to help orient yourself and learn about some of the histories of Denmark.
See the grand Amalienborg Palace, the royal family’s winter home
Walk past the colorful houses and wooden boats lining the picturesque Nyhavn waterfront
Marvel at the Marble Church and its formidable 31m dome
Listen to the life and fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen
Look at the Carlsberg Our Blowers statue
And more…
After the tour make your way to the Little Mermaid Statue for a quick picture with one of Copenhagen’s icons.
Then continue to Kastellet - a star fortress build in 1664 - it’s now a pleasant area for a walk or run.
Tivoli Gardens - have dinner in the food market which features international cuisine….there’s something for EVERYONE! Then enjoy rides, shopping, and people watching for a few hours.
You don’t have to buy a ticket to Tivoli Gardens to eat at the food market.
Saturday - Day 2
Go home with souvenir photos from Copenhagen by signing up for a Photo Walk.
I did THIS one thru Airbnb and Laura is wonderful! Not only does she know great places to get photos around the city, but she’s also a tour guide so can share many interesting tips and facts about Copenhagen.
Glyptoteket Museum
Nyhavn
Amalienborg Palace
City Hall Square
Oldest Street in Copenhagen - Magstraede
Christianborg Palace
Kongens Nytorv
Etc.
Lunch at RizRaz for a delicious vegetarian friendly Mediterranean buffet
FOOD WAS STELLAR
Wander Glyptotek Museum for an extensive collection of renowned paintings, sculptures, and artifacts.
Grab an Uber and head to Frederiksberg Gardens (9 min drive from Glytpotek) - a great place to go for a walk and enjoy the nature.
Open until 9PM
Grab dinner and then check out Copenhagen’s bar scene at a few of these cool spots.
Sunday - Day 3
Start the morning at Copenhagen’s Medical Museum - this is a fascinating interactive museum in the home of a former surgery education center.
Take an Uber (9 min) to Tycho Brahe Planetarium.
Sadly I did not make it here, but it looks really cool and I’d recommend including it if you can!
Take an Uber (10 min) to Freetown Christiania and spend the afternoon / evening wandering around, grabbing a bite, and having a drink or two!
If you aren’t familiar with Freetown Christiania - it’s a hippie, autonomous anarchist district in Copenhagen. It was setup in 1971 when a group of hippies began squatting there (Christiania was a former military base). People still live there today and the community has it’s own unique set of rules…famously cannabis has been openly sold here for 50 years!
This is a must visit when in Copenhagen! It’s super quirky and you will have learned the history of the area on your walking tours (although most can’t go in).
I recommend Morgenstedet for absolutely delicious vegetarian food. The choices are limited and the menu changes daily but everything was SO delicious.
Well I hope this is useful in your Copenhagen planning! Have you been to Copenhagen? Anything cool I missed?
